As Editor of Wreck & Rescue Journal, John Galluzzo has traveled the United States in search of takes of shipwrecks and lifesaving. Along the way, he has been treated to marvelous views of the country’s lighthouses – short, tall, ornamental, utilitarian – always dramatically situated and each with its own story to tell. In Lighthouses Far and Near he takes us on a journey from Boston Harbor to the Great Lakes to the West Coast and back again.

Refreshments will be served.

T/ween “No-Bake, Bake Off!” Feb 28th @ 6:30pm ‘ (Sign-up Gr 5-12)

The ‘No-Bake, Bake-Off!’ rules are fairly simple. You can make either a drink, appetizer or dessert that has a February holiday theme. It has to be primarily made in the library and you can use the microwave to heat up your creation. If you want to do some prep at home that is acceptable. You can bring your own blender. You have thirty minutes to create your entry. You may work alone or with a partner, and you must be sure to bring everything you need for materials.

The judges will use presentation, creativity and tastiness as their criteria and rate each category on a scale of 1-5. At the end, the highest score wins a ‘cheap and worthless’ prize. The judges will not allow a tie. After the judging is over, you’ll be able sample your competitors creations while they sample yours.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover, March 1, 6:30-8pm (Registration Required)

Does your teddy bear like adventure? Is your favorite dolly dying to get out of the house? Register for the ‘Stuffed Animal Sleepover’ that’s happening from 6-7:30pm on Thursday, March 1, in the Children’s Room. Children of all ages are welcome to prepare their favorite stuffed animal for a night in the library. We will read stories, make s’mores, sing lullabies, and more before you put your baby or critter to bed. Come back the following morning to see what kind of trouble your furry-little-friend or little dolly got into during the night! Feel free to wear your jammies! Registration is required so don’t delay as space is limited. (Parents, please be sure that your children don’t bring that one animal or doll they really can’t sleep without or it’s going to be a long long night.

How about a good book AND pizza? It’s Monday, 5:30pm, school vacation, you’re hungry and it’s time to share a great story! Bring the book you’ve just finished or maybe an old favorite you just love. We’ll share some of the reasons why we liked our books. And finally, we’ll all vote on the favorite pick of the night. The winning book and booktalker’s name will be displayed in the library as the week’s best choice to read! Registration is definitely required.

Create & Express — Thursday Art for Youth

New for youth on Thursdays are “Create & Express” art classes. Generally, these will be fun and easy crafts for any skill level. Each month in-house artist, Judy Marden, will offer you one or two crafts to choose from. The crafts will coordinate with the holidays and/or seasons and will often be offered for elementary age through middle school. Registration is required.

Feb 23, 4-5pm “Sand Art” Grades K and up
REQUIREMENT: Please bring a clear clean wide mouth salsa jar. (Not the tall ones, the short fat kind.) You must have your own jar to participate.

‘Dabblers’ Craft & Painting Weekly Drop-In every Tuesday 10:00 to noon

New on Tuesdays we have “The Dabblers” who are a painting and crafts group. They are looking for like-minded artisans to join them. They are seeking beginners to advanced folk in oil, acrylic or watercolor media on canvas, wood or paper. They are willing to help you get started or you can just bring in a project of your choice. This casual, friendly group meets every Tuesday from 10am to noon. Just drop in and stay for all or part of the time allotted. No registration is necessary.

(Teen Video Challenge 2012) New Hampshire is participating in the national “You are Here” Teen Video Challenge 2012, and YALS (the Young Adult Librarians of NH) is sponsoring this contest at the state level.
